Nautilus Art Prints x Mondo: Oliver Barrett’s ‘Rambo: First Blood’

As a character in modern American culture, John J. Rambo stands as the dissolution of the American dream. His mental dissolve is the curse of bureaucracy sacrificing the citizens of a country for those at the upper rings of society. Rambo is humanity fighting back against the inhumane treatment of the individual to protect the statements of a blind and uncaring government.

For his treatment of the character, illustrator Oliver Barrett shows John Rambo as animal, released from the hell of the Vietnam War into the climate of his current world with nowhere to go, no one to turn to. Those he protected now scoff, and worse, hoist their arms to rid the world of those like him.

Rambo is a soldier without a war, and now home, he is treated as vermin to be ignored or worse, killed off. His mind returns him to the jungle, ready to do anything to stay alive. Rambo is a modern folktale, where his trials rage against those that drew first blood.
