In her illustrations for Folio Society‘s hardback edition of Mansfield Park, Moscow-based illustrator Darya Shnykina moves the viewer inside the murmurings and conversations of the characters. She is looking for the angles, the looks, that betray the privacy of her subjects. Her digital brushwork lends her figures a sense of life, of movement. Each illustration is uncluttered, with Shnykina’s focus on Fanny Price and those closest to her.
Shnykina’s work moves between analog and digital creation, treating each with the same humanistic approach. In her personal series Places I’d Love to Live In, that humanity remains. The landscape becomes a home, vista as life itself. Shnykina’s skill lays in her ability to make each illustration personal, to pull her subject matter close inside and have it speak clear and quietly.
