The illustrations of George Caltsoudas shimmer like classic Little Golden Books — his lines are gentle and playful, crisp. In each composition, the colors pop and flow, giving life to the page.
There’s immediate recognizability to his work. His version of Steven Universe is very much in line with creator Rebecca Sugar’s vision, but his is still his, Caltsoudas’s special shine and glow are ever-present. When he takes on L. Frank Baum’s novel The Wonderful Wizard of Oz, the memory of the 1939 film disappears and the characters are new once again. Caltsoudas plays with existing properties, those well known nostalgic entities from comics to cartoons, and brightens the corners, shines the heart, making each young again.
