A Brief Look: The Illustrations of Leslie Herman

East Coast-based illustrator Leslie Herman is a throwback to the loose style of magazine work from the ’50s and ’60s. He shows the world as joy-filled, bright and embracing with a wonderful lightness in his compositions. Each gig poster an invitation to a party. Each editorial illustration an open door.

Herman has a deft touch with the whimsical in his construction of figures — faces built of dabs of color, smoked smudges and simple lips give shape to the population of Herman’s work.

His drawings are imperfect and rough yet he can nail a likeness or an accurate depiction of the real world when needed. No matter what he does, the artist’s hand alive on the paper.
