Designer Ash Thorp is a busy guy. Besides his recent design work on films like ‘Ender’s Game’, ‘Iron Man 3’, and and ‘After Earth’, Thorp’s been filling his free time hosting his own podcast, The Collective.
The Collective is a series of two hour conversations between Thorp and guests from the entertainment industry like Kevin Tong, Allan McKay, and Justin Ishmael of Mondo. The podcast has a casual tone like two peers talking over beers, a steady flow of discussion. Camaraderie. A sharing of ideas — the back and forth of creative minds.
Listening to the Kevin Tong episode I was reminded why both of these illustrators are favorites of mine — they talk about the importance of challenging yourself and putting your life experiences into your work as if anything less is not worth doing.
In ImagineFX’s July 2013 issue, Ash added a step by step live drawing tutorial on creating a comic book character into his stable of awesomeness. The video plays like a solo episode of The Collective with Thorp talking about the creative process and the detailed ins and outs of what it is he does.
The video is a must watch for anyone who calls them self creative. It’s a unique and rare look at an artist creating and thinking in real time.
As a creative force, Ash Thorp delivers beyond the final product. He’s a student of his own process, of his own creativity. Building challenges and forcing experimentation.
Watch the video, hear the podcast. Take the ride.
